What is a photofractal?
A photofractal is an image that is composed entirely of many other smaller images (cells). Up close, each individual cell image can be seen, whereas from a distance the overall source image is evident. For a more in depth explanation, please visit our blog.

How does the online ordering process work?
To complete the online ordering process all you will need are your chosen digital photos and a valid payment method. Simply go to the order page, select your photofractal preferences, upload your pictures and fill in your shipping and payment details as prompted. back to top
I can’t upload pictures because my internet connection is too slow
Our site uses special technologies to speed up image uploading, including automatically resizing images to suitable sizes before uploading, drastically cutting down on the time needed for uploading. Uploading should therefore be possible even on dial up connections. However, if this proves to be a problem please read on. back to top
Can I bring/send in a CD/other media instead of uploading pictures?
For customers who prefer not to upload their images, we can process images from a wide variety of media, including CDs, DVDs, USB Flashdrives, and most standard memory card formats. Customers can either bring them directly to our gallery (address at bottom of page) or select ‘I will post a CD/DVD/Other media containing my photos’ on the order page. Complete the rest of the order as normal and mail the media containing the images to the address provided on the order confirmation page. Flashdrives and memory cards will be sent back to the customer together with their photofractals. We recommend the use of CD’s however, as we cannot be responsible for lost mail.

Can I view a digital preview of my photofractal before you ship it?
After an order is confirmed, customers can email us for a preview if they wish. Previews are much smaller than the original files and are watermarked. At this point if you are not satisfied with your photofractal, we will revise it and send you a new preview until you are happy with it.

How long will it take for my photofractal to arrive?
Most photofractals take only 2 days to process after receipt of payment. Customers picking up their photofractals from our gallery can generally do so 2 days after confirmation of their orders and payments (after 2pm). For customers requesting domestic or international shipping, please refer to the shipping information for an estimate of shipping times. Note that shipping times are in addition to the 2 days needed for processing and that transit times for parcels may be subject to Customs Clearance at destination countries.

Can I have my photofractals framed?
At our gallery we offer a full range of high quality frames for our customers. We do not offer frames as a standard option online as they tend to be heavy and expensive to ship, however if this is desired please contact us.

How many photos do I need to make a photofractal?
The number of cells in a particular photofractal depends on a number of factors including the cell size, cell pattern and photofractal size chosen. Generally, the fewer photos there are, the more each photo will be repeated, so there is no particular number that is required. In the extreme case we have produced photofractals composed of just one image repeated hundreds of times over, with the source image being the same as the cell images. For a reasonably spread out look we typically recommend at least 40 pictures. The upper limit can be anything up to a few hundred photos.

What if I don't have enough pictures?
If you do not have enough pictures of your own, or require a particular source image, we can supplement your picture collection with our stock photos.

Will my photos be cropped?
In many cases, especially where non rectangular cell patterns are used, cell photos may be cropped. Cropping is performed from the outside in, so details on the outer edges of pictures may be lost. This only applies to cell pictures.
The only instances where a source photo might be cropped is when our image experts determine that cropping it will give a better effect, in which case they will always contact you for permission first.

What do the cell sizes mean exactly?
We offer five different cell sizes for your photofractal. Essentially the larger the cell size, the larger each individual cell image will be, but the overall image will contain fewer cells and may look less detailed. The smaller the cell size, the finer the detail of the overall photofractal, however obviously each cell image will be smaller. Because each photofractal is unique, there is no hard rule as to exactly how many cells are contained for a given cell size, however here are some general guidelines:
Fine: More than 45 cells (on the short length)
Small: 36-45 cells
Medium: 30-35 cells
Medium large: 24-29 cells
Large: below 24 cells

What works best as a background (source) image?
A wide variety of pictures work well as source images However, a general guideline is that simple pictures with prominent subject(s) tend to work the best, i.e. subject(s) that are relatively large in proportion to the overall picture. Also, avoid grey backgrounds as they tend to produce the worst results. In the event that our image experts find that your choice of source image produces a suboptimal result, we will contact you and recommend you choose another.

Can you create black and white photofractals?
Absolutely. If you send us black and white photos, this will be done automatically. However, if you send us colour photos and desire a black and white photofractal, please note this down in the comments section when ordering (or send us an email with your order details). We will then convert all of your pictures for you.

Can I have an image which is part original, part photofractal?
Yes, we can produce partial photofractals that have the original image in some places and photofractal cell images in other places. For example, some customers have requested portraits which have photofractal backgrounds while leaving the face untouched. However, please note that as the smallest unit of a photofractal is an individual cell image, the border between the original/photofractal area will be composed of the cell patterns and not a smooth edge.
